Infrared Safe Definition of Jet Flavour
نویسنده
چکیده
Though it is widely taken for granted that it makes sense to separately discuss quark and gluon jets, normal jet algorithms lead to a net parton-level jet flavour that is infrared (IR) unsafe. This writeup illustrates the problem and explains how the kt algorithm can be modified to provide an IR safe parton-level flavour. As well as being of use in theoretical calculations that require a projection of higher-order contributions onto a flavour-channel of the lowest order, jet-flavour algorithms also open up the prospect of significant improvements in the accuracy of heavy-quark jet predictions.

Recent progress in defining and understanding jets
This talk reviews some key developments that have taken place in hadron-collider jet finding over the past couple of years, including: technical advances such as the complete formulation of an infrared safe seedless cone algorithm and fast computational approaches to sequential recombination jet finders like the kt algorithm, together with universal methods for subtracting pileup; progress in u...
متن کاملRecent Progress in Jet Algorithms and Their Impact in Underlying
Recent developments in jet clustering are reviewed. We present a list of fast and infrared and collinear safe algorithms, and also describe new tools like jet areas. We show how these techniques can be applied to the study of underlying event or, more generally, of any background which can be considered distributed in a sufficiently uniform way. 1 Recent Developments in Jet Clustering The final...
متن کاملNonperturbative Corrections in Resummed Cross Sections
We show that the resummation of large perturbative corrections in QCD leads to ambiguities in high energy cross sections that are suppressed by powers of large momentum scales. These ambiguities are caused by infrared renormalons, which are a general feature of resummed hard-scattering functions in perturbative QCD, even though these functions are infrared safe order-by-order in perturbation th...
متن کاملJet Flavour Identification at the CLIC Multi-TeV e+e− Collider
Jet flavour identification in multi-TeV ee collisions is expected to provide insights on new phenomena at scales beyond those probed by the LHC. The anticipated high track density and jet collimation represent a new challenge to jet tagging algorithms. A method, based on the sampling of the jet charged multiplicity, sensitive to the long decay length and large decay multiplicity of heavy flavou...
متن کاملAccurate QCD predictions for heavy-quark jets at the Tevatron and LHC
Heavy-quark jets are important in many of today’s collider studies and searches, yet predictions for them are subject to much larger uncertainties than for light jets. This is because of strong enhancements in higher orders from large logarithms, ln(pt/mQ). We propose a new definition of heavy-quark jets, which is free of finalstate logarithms to all orders and such that all initial-state colli...
